Copeland Building Stabilization

Massachusetts Maritime Academy

Located precipitously at the edge of the Cape Cod Canal, the steel and masonry Copeland Building was being considered for demolition following critical damage during 1996 repairs to the bulkhead forming the water’s edge upon which it sits. Through expedient emergency measures, including hydraulic jacking and installation of grade beams, the building was stabilized. The building, originally constructed in 1933-34, has recently been renovated and continues to serve the Academy.

Fall River YMCA Comprehensive Renovation

Fall River, MA

The goal of this project was a comprehensive renovation to the YMCA’s existing facilities in Fall River. The original building was built in various phases between 1898 and 1964. For this reason special attention had to be given to resolving issues related to varying floor and ceiling heights between the different structures, while also providing a new addition to the northeast corner of the building, including an elevator and connection to the existing natatorium. Two supplementary full-height stair cases were also required within the main building in order to provide proper egress.

Ray Memorial Library

Franklin MA

The Ray Memorial Library, an historic building, was originally completed in 1904. This made updating accessibility and services to the building a major concern for the design process. To make the necessary improvements while also expanding the library’s current bookstacks and making space for new programs, an addition was planned for the southwest corner of the building. The addition allowed for expansion of the library’s bookstacks, while also allowing for the addition of a meeting room and young adult room.
